Product Description

Two-direction HF detection for long corridors

STEINEL DUAL HF COM1 UP is a white high-frequency presence detector for concealed-wiring ceiling installation in dry interiors. Two dedicated HF sensors monitor opposite corridor directions to create an elongated detection pattern. This is the specific 002978 COM1 article, with one relay output for switching lighting on and off. Its geometry suits passages in offices, hotels and educational buildings where people usually approach the detector along a clearly defined axis rather than moving across a broad open room.

The stated maximum coverage is 20 × 3 m in total, formed by up to 10 × 3 m in each direction. The manual describes electronic adjustment from approximately 3 to 10 m on either side, so 20 m must not be interpreted as the reach in a single direction. The reference mounting height is 2.8 m, within a permitted ceiling-height range of 2.5–3.5 m. The relatively narrow detection pattern helps focus coverage along the circulation route, while test mode supports adjustment to the actual corridor.

5.8 GHz high-frequency sensing identifies changes in reflected signals. Its response is therefore not dependent on the temperature contrast between a person and the surroundings in the same way as a passive infrared detector. HF detection can also work through glass, wood and lightweight partitions. This must be considered near adjoining rooms: a narrow pattern assists planning but does not guarantee that movement behind every closed door or partition will be excluded. The chosen reach should be checked against the materials and layout at the installation.

COM1 switching adapted to how the space is used

Potentiometers and DIP switches select automatic or semi-automatic operation, timing, brightness threshold and the behaviour of an external button or switch. Fully automatic operation responds to presence and available light. In semi-automatic mode the user requests lighting manually and the detector handles switching off. The S input accepts a manual command. This COM1 version switches one lighting circuit; it is not a dimmer, and the additional features of the separate DIM and COM2 family variants are not part of its specification.

The stay-on period runs from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, with a 10–1000 lux threshold and daylight operation. IQ mode adjusts the delay to movement patterns within a 5–20 minute range. Pulse mode produces an approximately two-second output pulse followed by an eight-second pause. Teach configuration is available through a compatible optional controller. These settings allow the installation to distinguish between a brief passage and a corridor where people need more time to reach the next illuminated area, without treating every building in the same way.

For larger installations, wired master/master or master/slave arrangements support up to ten detectors on the same phase. RC5, RC8 and Smart Remote are compatible optional control accessories. Using a phone through Smart Remote does not imply an onboard Bluetooth Mesh network. The manual requires the detector to be installed at least three metres from a Wi-Fi router or access point. Checking this condition at the ceiling-planning stage is particularly useful in office corridors where wireless networking equipment may already occupy the preferred sensor position.

UP installation and connected-load selection

The front measures 120 × 120 mm. The current product table states an overall depth of 74 mm, while the drawing shows 75 mm and the shared manual gives 76 mm; installation planning must allow for these source differences. This is the UP model. A surface-mounting adapter and a suspended-ceiling mounting adapter are separate accessories. The standard unit remains IP20 even though an IP54 surface adapter exists for the family. Its specified supply is 230 V AC at 50–60 Hz.

The current data sheet gives LED limits of 100 W for individual lamps below 2 W, 300 W for lamps above 2 and below 8 W, and 600 W for lamps above 8 W. Resistive loading can reach 2000 W, with a total capacitance limit of 176 µF. The 1500 W electronic-ballast rating must be read alongside the manual’s maximum inrush current of 800 A / 200 µs and its configuration-specific lamp-count limits. The connected equipment’s data must also be considered; one universal lamp-count ceiling cannot cover every combination. A qualified installer should check circuit and load compatibility before connection; the largest resistive rating should never be used as a universal LED rating.

  • An elongated two-direction pattern follows the corridor’s walking route.
  • Adjustable reach helps match detection to the actual passage length.
  • Automatic and semi-automatic modes preserve a choice for the user.
  • Wired grouping can coordinate several detection points.
