Product Description
STEINEL IR Quattro MICRO 6m is a compact presence detector for projects that call for an unobtrusive installation in the ceiling. Once installed, only a small white trim and the 15 × 15 mm precision lens remain visible, while the main sensor body sits above the ceiling surface. It suits a single office, hotel room, care room, washroom or another compact indoor space. The white plastic housing has a RAL 9003 finish that integrates neatly with light ceiling surfaces. Its IP65 rating also permits use in indoor rooms exposed to moisture, subject to correct installation and the electrical requirements. This is a recessed ceiling device that provides sensing information or control commands within an appropriate building management system.
MICRO covers a tangential movement area of 6 × 6 m and a presence area of 4 × 4 m at the manufacturer's illustrated height of 2.8 m. Installation is permitted at heights of 2–5 m, with a light threshold of 2–1000 lx. Spring clips retain the device in an opening up to 35 mm; the instructions specify at least 65 mm of installation depth. The article data lists 30 V KNX power and 0.5 W consumption. RC6, RC7 and Smart Remote are optional accessories; using a wireless remote does not replace the KNX bus connection.
Passive infrared technology (PIR) responds to moving sources of heat. For presence monitoring, it also detects smaller movements made by a person working at a desk. The detection angle is 360°, with a square pattern across the floor. Coverage should be planned around the installation height and actual workstation positions, because tall furniture, partitions and other obstructions can block the sensor's view. A PIR detector cannot guarantee recognition of a completely motionless person regardless of conditions. The manufacturer illustrates the detection area at a mounting height of 2.8 m; commissioning should include checking the places where occupants will sit and work. Measurement of ambient brightness complements the motion information, allowing the lighting system to take available daylight into account.
This is the KNX bus version with an integrated bus coupling. It provides motion, presence and brightness information as well as lighting control telegrams. The manufacturer's KNX application supports constant-light control and 0–100% dimming values for lighting outputs 1–4. These commands must be linked to the corresponding objects of a compatible external KNX dimming actuator. The detector can therefore regulate lighting towards a selected brightness target, while the actuator switches or dims the electrical load connected to the luminaire. Separate objects are also available for presence, day/night operation and heating, ventilation or air-conditioning control. Commissioning takes place in ETS software by assigning the physical address, selecting application parameters and connecting group addresses. The available operating behaviour depends on the functions enabled by the system integrator. Power comes from the KNX bus; the sensor must not be connected to a 230 V mains supply. Lighting, HVAC and manual override behaviour should be designed together with the relevant actuators.
Choose a position with a clear view of the monitored area and suitable separation from sources of heat that could affect detection. Heating equipment, air movement and moving objects within the planned zone deserve attention during commissioning. Space must be available above the ceiling for both the sensor housing and its connection; a small visible trim does not imply an equally small installation depth. The installation box, bus power supply, actuators and control unit should be selected to suit the actual project. If necessary, the sensor lens can be wiped with a damp cloth without cleaning agents. STEINEL states a five-year manufacturer's warranty for this Professional Line device, subject to the applicable warranty conditions.
