Product Description
STEINEL IS 1, white (RAL 9001), is a motion detector for automatic entrance, courtyard, driveway or terrace lighting. It detects moving heat sources and switches connected lights on when ambient brightness is below the selected threshold. The compact sensor can be installed on a wall or ceiling. Article 600310.
Practical benefits
- 120° coverage up to 10 m: maximum reach applies when moving across the detection field. Direct approach is specified up to 3 m, so mounting position matters.
- Adjustable head: 60° horizontal swivel and 180° vertical tilt let you aim the field. Supplied masks help exclude a public path, neighbouring property or other unwanted areas.
- 5 sec–35 min and 2–1000 lx: set how long the lights remain on and the ambient brightness at which movement activates them.
- IP54 and UV-resistant plastic: the housing is suitable for outdoor use and protected against splashing water; operating temperature is −20 to +50 °C.
- Up to 500 W resistive load: this is the connected-load limit. LED lamps have the separate limits listed below.
- Matching housing and lens colour: current manufacturer product photos show a lens coordinated with the housing finish.

Fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts are rated up to 250 W. Uncorrected, series-corrected and parallel-corrected fluorescent loads are each rated up to 500 VA; low-voltage halogen loads up to 500 VA. These limits are not additive. The specified capacitive load is 88 µF; also consider lamp drivers and the wiring diagram.
Mounting and positioning
The recommended mounting height is 2 m, within the manufacturer range of 1.8–3 m. Wall and ceiling mounting are supported. For best detection, position the sensor so people walk across its field. PIR detection does not work through walls or glass; environmental conditions and heat sources can affect response.
Supply: 230–240 V AC, 50 Hz. The sensor itself requires live L and neutral N. Wired master/master interconnection is supported; follow the relevant manufacturer wiring diagram and connected-load limits.
Settings and additional technical information
Settings are adjusted with controls on the unit. Aim or tilt the head and mask lens segments as needed to adapt the field. The manual describes approximately 2–10 m reach adjustment by tilting the head; actual reach depends on installation and movement direction.
This sensor switches lighting on and off. It has no remote control, Teach-in, basic-light function, dimming or constant-light-level regulation.

Wiring and initial checks
Concealed and surface cable entry are supported; the seals accommodate cable outer diameters of 5–9 mm. The instructions specify 10 A circuit protection. An external switch can select continuous or automatic lighting when wired as shown in the relevant manufacturer diagram. Installation should be performed by a qualified specialist with power disconnected.
Factory settings are 1000 lx and 5 sec, useful for checking coverage in daylight. LED loads may comprise up to 50 lamps, while also respecting the applicable total wattage limit; the manual specifies combined capacitance <88 µF.
Where required by the installation, open the designated condensation drain as directed in the instructions.
Operation and care
Reach changes with ambient temperature. If unwanted switching occurs, check for moving objects or the luminaire itself in the field and adjust the head or masking. If nearby Wi-Fi equipment causes interference, the instructions recommend increasing separation between the devices. Clean the housing with a damp cloth without cleaning agents after disconnecting power.
