Product Description

STEINEL IS 2180 ECO, anthracite (RAL 7016), is an outdoor motion detector for automatic entrance, courtyard, driveway and terrace lighting. 180° coverage with a choice of 5 or 12 m reach suits both a narrower walkway and a larger area. It detects moving heat sources and switches connected lighting according to the selected ambient-light threshold. Article 064907; dark lens.

Practical benefits

  • 180° horizontally and 90° vertically: two 120° pyroelectric sensors together cover the area in front of the wall. Sneak-by guard also detects movement directly beneath the unit.
  • Two reach settings: remove and reverse the lens to choose a 5 or 12 m basic zone. Shrouds allow adjustment within 1–12 m and can exclude a public path or neighbouring property.
  • 10 sec–15 min light-on time: choose a shorter delay for a passageway or a longer delay where illumination needs to remain on longer.
  • 2–2000 lx light threshold: a low threshold enables activation in darkness; the highest setting also supports testing in daylight.
  • IP54 and UV-resistant plastic: suitable for outdoor use and protected against splashing water; operating temperature −20 to +50 °C.
  • Up to 2000 W resistive load: suitable for controlling lighting groups. LED and other lamp types have the separate load limits listed below.

Reach and installation position

At an installation height of approximately 2 m, tangential reach is 5 m / 39 m² or 12 m / 226 m². For direct approach, the corresponding figures are 1.5 m / 4 m² and 3 m / 14 m². Position the detector across the expected direction of movement for the most reliable response. PIR detection does not work through walls or window glass.

Install on a wall at 1.8–4 m; the optimum height is 2 m. Keep at least 50 cm away from a light fitting to prevent radiated heat causing unwanted switching. A separately available bracket permits internal or external corner mounting; it is not included.

Supply: 230 V AC, 50 Hz. The sensor requires live L and neutral N; L′ is the switched output to the light and PE is the protective-conductor connection. Concealed and surface wiring are supported.

Connected lamps and loads

Power per LED lampMaximum combined load
LED < 2 W100 W
2 W < LED < 8 W175 W
LED > 8 W350 W

Up to 50 LED lamps are permitted while respecting the applicable total wattage limit. Electronic-ballast load is rated up to 350 W; the manual also specifies a limit of 50 LED/electronic-ballast units. Combined capacitance must be c < 132 µF.

Other loads: resistive and incandescent/halogen loads up to 2000 W; uncorrected fluorescent lamps 500 VA, series-corrected 900 VA, parallel-corrected 500 VA; low-voltage halogen lamps 1000 VA. These load limits are not additive.

Settings and additional technical information

Lens and detection-zone check

After fitting the lens, the selected 5 m or 12 m marking must be visible at the bottom right. Separate or cut shrouds along the horizontal or vertical markings as required, place them in the lens channel and secure them with the front cover.

Factory settings are 12 m, 10 sec and 2000 lx. Test in daylight with the lens fitted, the shortest time and the 2000 lx setting. Turning the time control fully anticlockwise selects approximately 10 sec; fully clockwise selects approximately 15 min. The light-threshold control selects approximately 2000 lx anticlockwise or 2 lx clockwise.

Wiring and external control

The instructions specify 10 A circuit protection and a supply-cable diameter no greater than 10 mm. Sealing plugs are used for surface wiring. The installation procedure specifies 6 mm wall plugs; a security screw secures the front cover against unauthorised removal. The optional internal-corner bracket can also route a cable from above behind the sensor on a flat wall. Installation should be performed by a specialist with power disconnected.

An external on/off switch can disconnect the supply. In the manual’s changeover-switch circuit, position I selects automatic operation and position II permanent lighting; that particular circuit has no off position. An external normally closed pushbutton that briefly interrupts the supply can activate lighting for the selected time.

Wired master/master interconnection with L′ detection permits up to 5 sensors. When one activates the light, connected sensors switch to daylight mode. The load limit does not increase proportionally with the number of sensors; follow the manufacturer wiring diagram.

Housing, functions and care

The optical system comprises 508 switching zones and uses mixed-light metering. Dimensions are 120 × 78 × 55 mm (height × width × depth); net weight 121 g. The specified power consumption of this anthracite sensor itself is 0.5 W.

Settings use potentiometers; this model has no Bluetooth, remote control, Teach-in, basic-light function, dimming or constant-light-level regulation. Package quantity: one sensor. Manufacturer warranty: 5 years under its terms; retain proof of purchase.

Animals, passing traffic, heat sources, ventilation flows and sudden temperature changes can cause unwanted activation. Adjust the field with shrouds or choose another position as needed. Clean the lens with a damp cloth without cleaning agents. The product controls lighting; it lacks the tamper protection required for specialist intruder-alarm systems. At end of life, take it to an electrical-equipment collection and recycling facility.
