Product Description
STEINEL L 400 S is a black outdoor wall sensor light with an E27 socket and a classic glass shade. It suits entrances, façades, terraces and areas beside driveways. Its clear, hand-blown crystal-glass shade has decorative air bubbles. A 240° PIR sensor switches the light in response to movement and the chosen ambient-light threshold. Article number: 611019.
Choose the E27 bulb separately
A bulb is not included. The light takes one E27 bulb rated up to 60 W. Light output, colour temperature and energy efficiency depend on the bulb you choose, so the luminaire has no single fixed lumen or colour-temperature rating. A suitable LED bulb can also be used. Basic light and soft start require a bulb compatible with the built-in dimming; these functions cannot be assumed to work with every E27 LED bulb. Set basic light to 0% when using a non-dimmable bulb.

What do 240° and a reach of up to 12 metres mean?
The PIR sensor detects changes caused by moving heat sources. It is most sensitive when a person moves across its detection zone: the maximum reach in this direction is 12 m. For movement directly towards the sensor, the specified reach is up to 3 m. These figures describe motion detection, not the distance illuminated. Horizontal coverage is 240°, with a 180° angle of aperture and detection beneath the sensor.
The supplied shrouds mask unwanted detection sectors, such as the road or a neighbouring property. The recommended mounting height is 2 m; the maximum specified height is 6 m. Actual detection depends on positioning, direction of movement and temperature.
Controls and lighting modes
- 5 seconds–15 minutes: adjustable light-on time after the last detected movement.
- 2–2000 lx: adjustable twilight threshold. A lower setting limits operation to darker conditions; the highest setting allows daytime testing.
- 0–50% basic light: a compatible bulb can provide reduced background lighting and switch to full brightness when movement is detected.
- Soft light start: a compatible bulb brightens gradually.
- Continuous light for up to 4 hours: activated with the supply switch as described in the instructions.
- Controls on the light: potentiometers set time, twilight threshold and basic light; no app is required.
L 400 S operates independently; Bluetooth, light-to-light interconnection and slave operation are not provided. 0.8 W is the sensor’s own consumption, whereas 60 W is the maximum bulb wattage. They describe different parts of the system.
Sensor alignment and manual operation
The sensor system has 9 detection levels and 304 switching zones. Its housing turns ±80° to aim the detection zone where needed. This adjusts sensor alignment rather than increasing its 240° coverage. Factory settings are a 5-second light-on time, daylight mode (2000 lx) and basic light off (0%).
If a switch is fitted in the supply circuit, switching the power off and on twice in quick succession (0.5–1-second intervals) activates continuous light for 4 hours. The light then returns to sensor mode automatically; one off/on cycle also cancels the override. For compact fluorescent bulbs, the instructions specify a minimum 5-minute light-on time.
Several lights can share the same mains supply, but each uses its own sensor; their sensor-control signals are not interconnected.
Installation, materials and contents
The light mounts on an outdoor wall and connects to a 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz mains supply. A surface-mounted supply cable can be used. The housing is UV-resistant plastic and the shade is transparent glass. IP44 means protection against solid objects of 1 mm or larger and splashing water. IK03 is the enclosure impact-resistance rating; electrical protection class II means double or reinforced insulation. Operating temperature: −20…+40°C.
The package contains one L 400 S light with an E27 socket and sensor masking shrouds. Purchase the bulb separately. Installation on an external building corner requires the optional EWH 03 bracket, article 630317, in the corresponding housing colour. A remote control is not included. The manufacturer warranty is 5 years, subject to STEINEL terms.
