Product Description
Motion sensing for ceiling lighting control
STEINEL MD-8 ECO COM1 DE is a white recessed ceiling motion detector combining passive infrared sensing with ambient-light measurement. The manufacturer article is 087807. It automatically controls a separately connected lighting circuit, for example in a circulation area, ancillary room or office entrance. Its job is to respond to movement and the selected light threshold. This is an MD motion detector; the additional presence sensitivity and presence-zone ratings of ECO PD models do not apply to this listing.
360° sensing covers the space surrounding the mounting point. The nominal tangential zone is Ø8 m, while the manual gives Ø8.5 m tangential and Ø4.5 m radial coverage at a height of 2.5 m. Tangential movement crosses the detection sectors; radial movement approaches the sensor. These figures are diameters, rather than radii, and do not imply identical sensitivity in every direction. Choose the sensor position with normal walking routes, doors and unobstructed sight lines in mind so that the coverage is useful in the room.
PIR technology responds to changes in heat radiation from moving objects. Walls, glass and other obstructions restrict its view, so it should not be selected for sensing through partitions. The supplied adjustable lens shroud can block unwanted sectors, such as an adjacent route. Adapt the shroud segments to the required coverage as described in the instructions. Test mode and the detector indication help confirm the actual response after installation. A fresh coverage check is also useful when furniture or normal walking routes are changed later.
Timing and ambient-light threshold
The stay-on time is adjustable from 5 seconds to 60 minutes. A shorter delay can suit a passage, whereas a longer setting gives someone time after entering an ancillary area. After the last detected movement, the detector waits for the selected delay and switches the load off. A 2–1000 lx twilight threshold adapts switching to existing daylight. Teach-IN stores the measured local light level after ten seconds, with the load off during measurement. Daytime mode allows movement to switch the lights regardless of the ambient brightness.
In fully automatic mode, the sensor and its settings determine when lighting switches on and off. In semi-automatic mode, a separately connected push-button is used to request lighting, while switching off remains automatic. This is useful when occupants should decide whether they need artificial light. The button input also supports manual switching on and off and a four-hour continuous-on override. The push-button cable must be shorter than 50 m. The manufacturer's instructions explain the operating sequence and how to return to ordinary automatic or semi-automatic operation.
Potentiometers provide basic adjustment. RC8 and Smart Remote are optional remote controls, while RC5 offers user-control functions. Smart Remote makes phone or tablet app configuration possible using a separate accessory. The Bluetooth link in that arrangement belongs to Smart Remote; it does not mean this detector has built-in Bluetooth or Mesh networking. No remote is included. This distinction helps select an appropriate configuration method when the sensor will be positioned somewhere that is inconvenient to reach for routine adjustment.
One relay circuit and load selection
COM1 has one ON/OFF relay output with switched live, rather than a potential-free contact. The detector uses a 220–240 V AC supply. Compatible detectors can be joined by a wired parallel connection via L′, with a maximum of ten devices. For LED and electronic-ballast loads, the 500 W limit, maximum of 50 units and total capacitance below 176 µF all apply simultaneously. Total wattage alone is insufficient to establish compatibility; all these limits need to be considered together when choosing lighting and control gear. The COM1 version does not provide brightness dimming.
DE installation in a ceiling opening
The DE version is designed for recessed ceiling installation with spring fittings. Its overall assembly dimensions are Ø109 × 109 mm; Ø109 mm is the external diameter, not the cutout. Manufacturer drawings show the sensor and adapter components separately. The adapter instructions specify a Ø68 mm opening; the Ø67 mm adapter-body drawing does not specify the hole size. The adapter instructions specify a ceiling-material thickness of 10–25 mm. Check the available space above the ceiling and spring-fixing requirements before installation. This is an IP20 indoor unit; the IP54 rating of the ECO AP version does not apply to the DE listing.
The manual specifies a 2.5–4 m mounting range and 2.8 m optimum height. The current MD-8 table starts its mounting range at 2 m, while the detailed manual starts at 2.5 m. We use the manual range here for installation planning. The wiring diagram and manufacturer documents help match the chosen installation to the lighting circuit. After installation, check all required coverage in the actual room layout.
For DE installation, also use the manufacturer adapter installation instructions (PDF), shared by the adapter linked on the product page with other compatible families.
