Product Description

All-round motion detection from the ceiling

STEINEL MD IR N360 COM1 DE is a standalone nexx.IS PRO motion detector in anthracite RAL 7016, manufacturer article 087432. This is the recessed ceiling version with 360° passive infrared detection, intended to control separately selected entrance, passage or approach lighting. It detects changes in heat radiation from moving people and takes the surrounding light level into account. The ceiling format suits places requiring an all-round field below the mounting point, while its settings allow the lighting response to follow the way that people use the approach.

The manufacturer specifies a tangential zone of up to Ø26 m. In the shared manual, this diameter is illustrated at a mounting height of 2.5 m, with a conventional radial detection radius of 3 m. The current specification separately lists a nominal radial zone of Ø7 m. Head-on movement and movement across the field produce different detection results, so the zones should be assessed for the actual walking direction and installation height. Walls, glazing and other obstacles interrupt the detector’s infrared view.

Eagle Eye and four adjustable sensing sectors

The Eagle Eye window in the lens improves approach detection in a selected direction. At 2.5 m height, the manual gives this area a reach of up to 6 m from the detector. Align the window with the entrance or path, then use the supplied cover clips to mask unwanted segments. This is useful where a public footpath or another frequently used area sits beside the intended approach and should not determine the response of the connected lighting.

MD IR N360 has four PIR sensors with individually adjustable sensitivity between 1 and 100 percent. Configure the settings in the app and check movement along the intended route and at the edges of the field. Test mode works independently of ambient brightness and also allows the response to be assessed through the status indicator without a connected load. Install the unit on a stable base so that movement or vibration of the housing does not cause unwanted triggering.

App settings, twilight and lighting groups

STEINEL Connect and Bluetooth Mesh provide configuration from a compatible smartphone or tablet and wireless organisation into lighting groups. Group members follow shared control parameters while individual sensitivity can still be set for each sensor. The neighbouring-light function coordinates connected approaches. The detector can also operate on its own. When another mobile device needs configuration access, the network key is shared through the app, allowing the existing lighting network to be managed from that device.

The stay-on time after movement can be chosen from 5 seconds to 60 minutes, with a twilight threshold between 2 and 2000 lux. Teach-IN saves the brightness measured on site, making it practical to choose the desired switching condition at dusk. Daytime mode allows movement-based operation or testing independently of natural light. These settings help the response suit the actual entrance, while the test mode makes it easier to check the final placement and masking.

One relay for lighting switching

COM1 provides one ON/OFF relay output with a switched live. It suits lighting requiring automatic switching in response to movement and the selected brightness threshold. Pulse mode activates the output for two seconds and then observes an eight-second dead time, for example when controlling a compatible staircase-lighting timer. COM1 is the switching version; brightness adjustment and a basic-light level belong to the separate uDIM interface. Choose the output type to match the lighting task and its electrical installation.

The resistive incandescent or halogen load limit is 2000 W. LED and electronic-ballast loads must respect 350 W, no more than 10 LED/fluorescent lamps, and a total capacitance below 132 µF. This combines the N360 manual’s power and capacitance limits with the stricter lamp-count limit in the current exact data sheet. Distinguishing these load categories ensures that the larger resistive-load figure is not applied to connected LED drivers.

Recessed installation and the gallery example

The DE sensor unit measures Ø83 × 74 mm and is held by springs in a Ø68 mm ceiling opening. Its separate connection box above the ceiling measures 109 × 63 × 30 mm and connects through a 500 mm cable. IP54 applies to the sensor unit, while the manual rates the connection box IP20; the box therefore needs a protected location. The detector is intended for indoor and outdoor ceiling installation with this distinction and the manufacturer’s installation conditions observed.

The permitted mounting range is 1.8–6 m. The current COM1 data sheet identifies an optimum height of 2 m, while the shared manual specifies 2.5 m; its detection examples must be read with their stated height. The first gallery photograph shows the offered anthracite RAL 7016 DE version with spring fittings. The manufacturer’s night entrance photograph is a family application example, whose installed article colour and COM1 interface are not confirmed. The luminaires, bicycles and other equipment shown are not included.
