Presence and movement information for KNX

STEINEL PD-8 ECO KNX AP is a black surface-mounted presence detector for indoor ceiling installation. The manufacturer article number of this offer is 087944. Passive infrared technology responds to human movement, while the presence function helps the control system evaluate smaller movements at a workstation. Mixed-light measurement also supplies information about the available daylight. This makes the detector suitable for offices, meeting rooms and other working areas where lighting should respond to room use. The actual switching and dimming behaviour depends on the KNX configuration and the connected actuators.

The KNX interface identifies the version offered here. Power and communication use the KNX bus; the housing does not contain a relay for a 230 V lamp load or a phase-cut dimming output. Lighting loads connect to suitable separate KNX actuators. The 2000 W or 500 W LED load figures advertised for other ECO COM 1 versions therefore do not apply to this article. A KNX power supply, lighting actuators and luminaires are not included with the detector. Select the device as part of a compatible building-control system, with each component providing the function required by the project.

Different areas for movement and presence

The 360° detection field surrounds the detector. The current exact-article page and data sheet specify up to Ø8 m tangential movement detection, Ø4.5 m radial movement detection and Ø6 m presence detection. Tangential movement crosses the field, whereas radial movement approaches the detector. These figures are diameters of areas, not distances extending that far in every direction from the sensor. Plan small movements at a desk within the presence area. The widest movement field does not promise equally sensitive detection throughout the room. The detector has 492 switching zones.

The supplied operating instructions state the coverage figures at a 2.5 m installation height and give Ø8.5 m for tangential detection. This offer uses the more conservative Ø8 m from the current data sheet; radial and presence diameters agree between the sources. The current page and Quick Start give 2–4 m, while the full manual gives 2.5–4 m. This offer uses their common 2.5–4 m mounting range, and the manufacturer gives 2.8 m as the optimum height. A greater installation height does not preserve the same sensitivity to small movements. Furniture, partitions and other obstructions can affect the visible area. The included insertable shrouds allow unwanted detection sectors to be masked when planning coverage.

KNX functions and commissioning

The manufacturer lists two lighting-control outputs as KNX telegrams, constant-lighting regulation, transmitted brightness values, a twilight function and a basic-light function. Further capabilities include a presence output, heating/ventilation/air-conditioning information, a logic function, day/night operation and sabotage protection. These are configurable system functions. Actual lamp dimming and operation of other equipment take place through suitable KNX actuators. The brightness setting range is 2–800 lx. Commission the functions and the appropriate delays in ETS according to the installation design, taking account of the selected actuators and the behaviour required by the room.

Configuration uses ETS software and the KNX bus. The separately available Smart Remote can also start the programming mode. Bluetooth app use in this context is associated with that remote control; it does not mean that the detector contains a Bluetooth Mesh network interface. The current product table lists 10 mA rated current, while the supplied operating instructions give 15 mA at 24 V. Allow for the manual's 15 mA value when planning the bus power supply, together with every other device on the KNX line. The two different current statements should not be treated as interchangeable ratings.

The KNX application also provides a dedicated twilight-switch function with its own 2–800 lx threshold and a 1-bit KNX ON/OFF telegram. This is a separate brightness-threshold switching function, rather than only a numeric brightness measurement. A compatible external KNX actuator switches the lighting load, and a powered KNX bus is required; these components are not included. The sensor has no integrated 230 V twilight relay. The full manual gives 2–1000 lx, while the current data sheet and the twilight-threshold object in the exact linked KNX application give 2–800 lx; this offer uses that common range.

Surface installation and housing

The plastic housing of this AP surface-mounted version measures Ø129 × 65 mm. Exact-article net weight is 241 g. A magnetic modular connection simplifies fitting the sensor part to its mounting base. The AP version has IP 54 protection and a stated ambient range of −20 to +50 °C, while the intended application remains indoors. The low temperature limit and ingress-protection marking alone do not establish suitability for exposed outdoor installation. Concealed-wiring and recessed-ceiling ECO products are separate articles; their dimensions or mounting openings must not be applied to this surface-mounted offer.
