Product Description
Two light measurements for a DALI-2 system
STEINEL Light Sensor Dual DALI-2 IPD AP is a white, round, surface-mounted light sensor for professional lighting management. The manufacturer article number of this version is 057428. Two photodiodes measure directed and diffuse light: one reading describes the light level in the selected area below the sensor, while the other helps represent overall room brightness. This combination is useful in offices, classrooms and meeting rooms where the daylight available at a desk can differ from the general lighting condition. A suitably configured system controller uses the readings to determine how the connected lighting should respond.
Light Sensor Dual does not detect movement or human presence. Its role is to supply brightness data, so it has no PIR detection distance, movement-triggered hold timer or relay for switching a 230 V lamp load. A project requiring occupancy detection needs a separate sensor compatible with its chosen control system. The stated 2–1000 lx range describes light measurement; it should not be interpreted as the setting range of a self-contained twilight-switch relay. This distinction is useful when choosing between a measuring device and a sensor that directly switches lighting.
Power and communication through the DALI bus
DALI-2 Input Device identifies a device that supplies measured input values to a higher-level lighting management system. A compatible DALI-2 application controller and a powered DALI bus are required and are not supplied with this sensor. The controller can request current readings or use automatic reporting configured for a particular brightness change or a recurring time interval. The sensor has no autonomous constant-lighting control function. Switching and dimming behaviour depend on the application controller, the lighting control gear and the configuration of the complete installation.
The DALI line provides both communication and the stated 12–22.5 V supply. Consumption is 6 mA, described in the operating instructions as the load of three DALI participants. The instructions classify the connection as non-SELV. The sensor is not a device for direct connection to 230 V mains, and mains voltage must not be applied to its bus terminals. Configure the use of its brightness values in accordance with the selected controller documentation. The manufacturer gives a maximum connection length of 300 m with a 1.5 mm² conductor; the actual cable length and number of participants must also satisfy the power and installation requirements of the complete DALI system.
Surface installation and a representative measuring position
This is the AP surface-mounted version with a white RAL 9003 plastic housing, IP54 protection and wall or ceiling installation. The current exact-article drawing and the round AP housing illustration in the manual give Ø126 × 56 mm. The generic length/width/height row on the product page includes 95 mm, which does not describe this round housing diameter; use the exact-article drawing for installation planning. Net weight is 145 g. The stated mounting height is 2–4 m and the ambient temperature range is −20 to +50 °C. Positioning should allow the sensor to represent the intended working area. Avoid locations too close to windows or reflecting surfaces, and check that tall furniture, stored materials or other objects below the device will not alter the light reaching its measuring elements.
The current exact product page and data sheet list both indoor and outdoor applications, while the supplied DALI-2 operating instructions define proper use as installation indoors. This offer is therefore scoped to indoor installation; the IP54 rating alone is not a promise of suitability for a particular exposed outdoor location. The product is a measurement element within a control system rather than a luminaire. Its location and controller compatibility should be selected as part of the lighting management design, allowing the readings to represent the area that the installation is intended to illuminate.
Images and manufacturer documents
The main manufacturer image shows the white round AP housing of this version. The meeting-room photograph is a manufacturer application example: the exact model and interface of the installed sensor have not been confirmed, and the room lighting, furniture and control equipment are not included. The computer-generated room illustration explains the light measurement principle and is not a photograph of an installation. The dimension drawing and DALI wiring diagram support installation planning. Other surface/concealed and round/square versions shown in the shared instructions are family examples, not additional supplied sensors. The manufacturer states a five-year warranty subject to its warranty terms.
