Product Description
Two sensing technologies in one ceiling detector
STEINEL DualTech COM2 UP is a white presence detector for offices, meeting rooms and classrooms. It combines passive infrared and ultrasonic sensing so that operation can be adjusted to the layout and the way people use the space. This is article 008000, with a RAL 9010 housing and a UP base for concealed-wiring ceiling installation. In addition to its lighting relay, the COM2 version has a second presence-operated contact for a heating, ventilation or air-conditioning control circuit. This is useful where lighting and ventilation need different timing conditions and should not simply follow an identical on/off sequence.
PIR and ultrasound cover different areas within the 360° field. The current data sheet specifies an ultrasonic movement-detection diameter of up to 10 m and a presence diameter of 6 m, corresponding to approximately 28 m². PIR tangential detection reaches an 8 m diameter, while radial movement and presence coverage are specified at 4 m. These figures are diameters, not radii. Workstations should be planned around the presence area, because detecting small activity at a desk is a different task from noticing someone walking farther away.
40 kHz ultrasound can help detect movement behind objects within a room when the sensor has no direct line of sight. The PIR channel responds to changes in thermal radiation. Combining the technologies is useful in furnished workspaces with desks and partitions, although the finished installation still needs to be tested. The manual identifies fans, heating or ventilation equipment, and open doors or windows as possible sources of unwanted detection. Adjustment should therefore reflect the real environment rather than an empty-room plan alone.
Choose what starts lighting and what keeps it on
DIP switches 6, 7 and 8 select the sensing combination. The supported combinations can require confirmation by both technologies, accept either one, or use PIR or ultrasound individually for initial detection and for maintaining occupancy. For example, both signals can be required to switch the light on, followed by either signal being sufficient to keep it on. The factory setting accepts either technology at both stages. This provides a practical way to adapt response to workstations and circulation areas, beyond simply increasing or reducing overall sensitivity.
The lighting stay-on period is adjustable from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, with a 10–1000 lux response threshold and a separate daylight setting. IQ mode learns usage patterns and adapts the delay within a five-to-twenty-minute range. Pulse mode provides an approximately two-second pulse followed by an eight-second pause, for example to trigger a compatible staircase lighting timer in daylight mode. Test operation helps check coverage before normal operating settings are selected. Teach configuration is available through a compatible control accessory.
The manual limits the additional COM2 HVAC contact B1/B2 to 1 A and 230 W at 230 V for a resistive load. It serves a low-energy control circuit with appropriately rated protection. Its switch-on delay is adjustable from zero to ten minutes, while the stay-on time runs from one to 120 minutes. Room-surveillance mode requires more pronounced movement and disables the switch-on delay. This output responds to occupancy; it does not replace a temperature or humidity controller, nor does it independently measure those room conditions.
Potentiometers and DIP switches provide local adjustment, while RC8 and Smart Remote are separately available control accessories. No remote is included. Using a phone through Smart Remote does not mean that the detector has an onboard Bluetooth Mesh radio. Several detection points can be combined in a wired master/master or master/slave arrangement, with up to ten detectors connected on the same phase. This supports larger rooms where the presence area of one unit cannot cover every workstation, while preserving the wiring and load-control arrangements defined in the manual.
Installation planning and compatible connected loads
The detector is designed for indoor ceiling installation at 2.5–3.5 m, with a recommended height of 2.8 m. Its front measures 120 × 120 mm. The drawing and manual give an overall depth of 68 mm, whereas the current table states 66 mm; installation planning should allow for this documented difference. Surface-mounting and suspended-ceiling adapters are separate accessories. This ultrasonic detector remains IP20 even when used with a surface adapter, so the installation belongs in a dry interior rather than outdoors.
The specified supply is 220–240 V AC at 50–60 Hz. The lighting relay accepts up to 2000 W of resistive load. LED limits are 100 W for lamps below 2 W, 300 W for lamps above 2 and below 8 W, and 600 W for lamps above 8 W; the capacitance limit is 176 µF. The 1500 W electronic-ballast figure must be applied together with the manual’s maximum inrush of 800 A / 200 µs and its configuration-specific lamp limits. A qualified installer should check the wiring and the selected load.
- Two sensing technologies help adapt detection to a furnished workspace.
- Separate initial and continuing-occupancy conditions offer finer adjustment.
- Automatic or semi-automatic operation can follow the room’s working routine.
- Wired grouping supports several coordinated detection points.
