Product Description
STEINEL IR 180 AP easy is a surface-mounted wall sensor switch that turns connected lighting on when it detects movement. Article 066048 has a grey enclosure for installations that need a complete housing on the wall, such as utility rooms, corridors, garages and sheltered entrances. Its integrated button also allows manual operation, combining the familiar position of a wall switch with automatic control when somebody enters or passes through the monitored area.
Detection and positioning
The passive infrared sensor responds to changes in the heat emitted by moving people or animals. It covers a 180° detection angle with a 90° angle of aperture and reaches up to 8 m for movement across its field. The specified radial reach is up to 3 m, so walking directly towards the sensor produces a different result from walking across it. Walls and glazing obstruct the heat signal; movement behind these barriers cannot trigger the connected light.
The recommended installation height is 1.1 m, within the current data sheet's 0.9–2.2 m mounting range. The sensor has 96 switching zones and detection beneath the unit. Electronic and mechanical reach scaling are not provided, making a suitable location and an on-site walk test important. A light source inside the monitored area can cause unwanted switching as it heats or cools, so the sensor and luminaire should be positioned with this interaction in mind.
Timing, daylight and manual control
Local controls set the brightness threshold between 2 and 1000 lux and the stay-on time between 5 seconds and 30 minutes. Further movement restarts the selected delay. After the light switches off, approximately six seconds pass before motion detection can switch it on again. Daylight mode is useful during commissioning, while a lower threshold restricts automatic operation to darker conditions. The controls therefore let the installer match the behaviour to the room without an external programming device.
A short press of the integrated button changes the light state. Manual activation can turn the light on even when the surrounding area is bright enough to prevent normal automatic activation. The unit subsequently returns to sensor operation under the conditions described in the manual; this is not a fixed four-hour override. Teach mode stores the current ambient brightness after the button is held for five seconds, with measurement occurring five seconds after release. The status LED can also be disabled through the time control.
Two-wire or three-wire installation
The supply is 220–240 V AC at 50–60 Hz. The manual supports a two-wire circuit without a neutral conductor at the switch, or a three-wire circuit with N. The minimum connected load is 4 W without N and 1 W with N. This distinction matters with small LED lamps: if a lamp glows or flickers when switched off in a two-wire circuit, the manual advises connecting the neutral conductor or changing the lamp. A qualified electrician should select the appropriate circuit from the supplied instructions.
The L′ output provides the switched mains phase to the lighting load. Up to five sensor switches may be interconnected according to the manual, but N must then be connected at every switch. Adding sensors does not increase the permitted connected load. This is a wired arrangement with local controls. The switch operates the lighting on and off; it does not provide continuous brightness regulation or a dimming output.
Load limits and enclosure
The permitted incandescent or halogen load is 200 W, as specified by both the manual and the product's technical table. A separate manufacturer pictogram showing 2000 W does not agree with those sources for this article. The current LED limits are 40 W for lamps below 2 W each, 100 W for the category above 2 W and below 8 W, and 160 W for lamps above 8 W. The current data sheet also specifies a maximum of four LED or fluorescent lamps; the manual's higher figure of 50 units is not presented as the permitted purchase specification here. Total capacitance must remain below 132 µF.
The plastic enclosure is grey RAL 7035, with IP54 protection and electrical protection class II. Although the manufacturer lists indoor and outdoor applications, the operating range is 0 to +40°C, so a location exposed to frost falls outside it. The drawing specifies 82 × 72 × 67 mm in height, width and depth order; net weight is 199 g. The unit requires no routine mechanical maintenance and can be wiped with a damp cloth without detergent.
Key points
- 180° PIR; up to 8 m across the detection field.
- Two or three wires; minimum load depends on the neutral connection.
- 5 s–30 min; local setting controls and manual button.
