Product Description
Presence control at a familiar wall-switch position
STEINEL IR 180 COM1 is a white wall-mounted presence switch with an integrated button and one relay output for switching lighting on and off. It suits offices, corridors and ancillary rooms where automatic operation should retain a straightforward manual control. The RAL 9010 housing has an 80 × 80 mm front frame and fits a concealed wall-box installation. This is the specific 029944 COM1 article, intended to switch lighting according to detected movement and the measured ambient light level.
180° passive infrared detection responds to changes in heat radiation caused by movement. The current exact data sheet gives a tangential radius of up to 12 m, with radial movement and presence coverage reaching a radius of up to 4 m. A person crossing the field can therefore be detected farther away than someone approaching the sensor directly. Positioning should reflect the actual route through the room and preserve a clear view. PIR sensing does not detect movement through walls or glass, so furniture and open doors must be considered when choosing the location.
Automatic operation, a button and adjustable settings
Potentiometers and DIP switches on the sensor module provide direct selection of settings and operating modes. Fully automatic operation switches the lighting on when movement and the ambient-light threshold call for it. In semi-automatic mode, the user switches the light on and the sensor handles subsequent automatic switching off. The integrated button can be enabled or disabled, with a choice between manual on-only and on/off operation. This allows the same detector to support the habits of an individual workspace or the simpler expectations of a shared area.
The stay-on period is adjustable from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, with a twilight threshold from 2 to 1000 lux. IQ mode adapts the delay to usage patterns within a 5–20 minute range. A separate pulse setting produces an approximately two-second output pulse followed by an eight-second pause, for example when triggering a compatible staircase lighting timer. Reach can be adjusted in stages from approximately 5 to 12 m. Test mode helps establish the useful detection area before everyday timing and light-level settings are selected.
RC5, RC8 and Smart Remote are optional control accessories that can provide further configuration or user functions. Teach with a compatible controller stores a suitable light threshold measured at the installation. A phone connection through Smart Remote does not mean that this detector contains Bluetooth Mesh hardware. Larger detection areas can instead use wired master/master or master/slave arrangements, following the manual’s same-phase and connection requirements. This provides a way to coordinate several detection points while keeping the switched lighting circuit and its controlling relay clearly defined.
Installation depth and connected loads
The detector fits a concealed wall box at a mounting height of 1.1–1.2 m. The drawing and manual establish an overall depth of 50 mm, including a 30 mm rear insertion section. The generic table’s 30 mm figure must therefore not be interpreted as the full product depth. A neutral conductor N is required; the functional lighting connection uses live L, neutral and switched live L′. Installation belongs with a qualified electrician. The manual also requires at least one metre from lights whose heat could affect infrared detection.
Permitted LED loading depends on individual lamp power: 100 W total for lamps below 2 W, 300 W for lamps above 2 and below 8 W, and 600 W for lamps above 8 W. The simultaneous limits of eight LED or fluorescent lamps and 176 µF capacitance must be respected. Resistive loading is rated up to 2000 W. For electronic ballasts, this listing uses the more conservative 600 W manual limit, although the product table lists 1000 W. IP20 protection and the 0…+40 °C operating range make this a detector for dry interiors.
- Automatic lighting retains a familiar manual wall button.
- Semi-automatic mode lets the user choose when lighting is needed.
- Adjustable reach and test mode help match detection to the room layout.
- Wired interconnection can extend the collectively monitored area.
