Product Description
Presence control for occupied workspaces
STEINEL IR Quattro HD-2 24m COM2 UP is a white ceiling presence detector for offices, classrooms and meeting rooms where lighting should follow actual room use. This is the COM2 version with lighting and HVAC relays, switching connected lighting on and off by combining movement detection with measured ambient brightness. Electric lighting can therefore remain off when daylight already provides enough illumination, while a selected delay keeps the lights on briefly after the last movement. The white RAL 9003 housing can be coordinated with the ceiling finish and other visible fittings rather than chosen solely for its detection specification.
Square coverage with adjustable sensitivity
Detection uses passive infrared technology, or PIR, with four sensing elements. Their individual sensitivity can be adjusted in the STEINEL Connect app to suit the room layout. The 360° square detection area is useful in rectangular workspaces, but the mounting position must leave an unobstructed view of the occupied areas. Furniture and partitions can interrupt that view. PIR responds to changes in heat associated with movement; it does not identify a completely motionless person from breathing alone and is not a True Presence detector. Heat sources and movement outside the intended area should also be considered during commissioning.
At the manual’s reference mounting height of 2.8 m with potentiometer position 7, tangential movement can be detected across 24 × 24 m, the presence area is 9 × 9 m, and radial movement in that particular table row covers 7.5 × 7.5 m. These figures describe different movement patterns: the largest area must not be assumed to provide the same sensitivity to small actions at a desk. Permitted mounting heights are 2.5–10 m. For another height or potentiometer setting, use the corresponding manual table instead of scaling the largest figure by assumption. Digital sensitivity adjustment supplements the mechanical reach setting.
Brightness threshold, delay and push-button control
The 2–2000 lx brightness threshold lets automatic activation be matched to the desired lighting conditions. Teach stores the brightness measured in the room, while daylight mode responds to movement regardless of brightness. A delay determines how long lighting remains on after the final detected movement: the article page and manual function description give 5 seconds to 60 minutes, while the manual technical table gives a 10-second minimum. Check the available setting in the device app. Fully automatic mode switches lighting on and off automatically. In semi-automatic mode, a push-button requests lighting and subsequent switch-off remains automatic. The S input accepts a button connection with a cable shorter than 50 m; its function is selected in the app. Presentation mode helps keep manually extinguished lighting off while movement is still detected in the room.
Wireless groups and connected lighting loads
Bluetooth Mesh supports detector groups and a neighbouring-group function, useful when coordinating lighting across adjoining work areas. Configuration uses a Bluetooth-capable phone or tablet with STEINEL Connect. The detector operates from 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz and provides a switched-live relay output rather than a floating contact. The resistive-load limit is 2000 W. LED selection also depends on each lamp’s rating: the manufacturer lists 100 W for lamps below 2 W, 300 W for lamps above 2 W and below 8 W, and 600 W for lamps above 8 W, together with a maximum of eight LED or fluorescent lamps and 176 µF capacitive loading. COM2 provides on/off switching rather than a lighting dimmer output or constant-light regulation.
Concealed installation in indoor ceilings
The UP concealed-mounted housing is designed for a ceiling installation with hidden wiring. A magnetic attachment holds the sensor module to the load module and allows access during setup. This exact version is rated IP20, so it belongs in suitable indoor locations; its family name alone does not establish suitability for outdoor or wet environments. The manufacturer’s technical table and manual give 103 × 103 × 69 mm, while the separate drawing shows 67 mm overall depth. Installation space should therefore be checked against the complete drawing and the actual mounting box. Net weight is 173 g. A qualified installer should connect it using the COM2 wiring diagram. The manufacturer’s five-year warranty applies subject to its terms.
A separate contact for ventilation and climate control
The second COM2 output is a floating B0/B1 contact for heating, ventilation or air-conditioning control. The manufacturer specifies a maximum of 230 W at 230 V, 1 A with cos φ = 1, protected by an appropriately rated fuse. It is separate from the switched-live lighting output, so its connection should be planned around the climate equipment’s control circuit. The factory HVAC stay-on time is 15 minutes and the switch-on delay is initially disabled; actual settings can be adapted in STEINEL Connect. This contact does not imply temperature or humidity measurement and does not provide a lamp-dimming function.
