Presence information for a DALI-2 lighting system
STEINEL IR Quattro HD-2 24m DALI-2 IPD UP is a white ceiling sensor for offices, classrooms and other indoor spaces where lighting control forms part of a DALI-2 system. This version is a DALI-2 IPD input device: it collects information about the room and sends it to a separate compatible application controller, or APC. That controller decides how the luminaires should operate according to the system configuration. The detector must therefore be chosen alongside the intended control equipment rather than treated as a standalone relay with a lamp connected directly to it. Its white RAL 9003 housing and UP concealed-mounted installation suit the corresponding ceiling construction.
Four PIR elements and square room coverage
Movement detection uses passive infrared technology, or PIR. The sensitivity of the four elements can be adjusted individually through the DALI bus, while the reach potentiometer provides an additional mechanical way to adapt the detection area. This helps concentrate coverage on occupied work areas and reduce unwanted responses around the room edges. The 360° square detection pattern is intended to cover the room from a ceiling position. A clear view matters because partitions and tall furniture can hide movement. Presence detection here relies on small movements; this is not True Presence breathing detection, and detection of a completely motionless person must not be assumed.
At the manufacturer’s reference height of 2.8 m, the maximum tangential movement area is 24 × 24 m, while the presence area is 9 × 9 m. The manual’s table gives 7.5 × 7.5 m for radial movement at that height with potentiometer position 7. The larger tangential area does not imply equally sensitive detection of small actions throughout the whole room. Permitted mounting heights are 2.5–10 m. Choose the actual position and coverage using the manual table, room layout and an on-site detection test. Where needed, several compatible detectors can be included in the system to cover the occupied areas.
Movement, brightness and indoor environmental data
The APC can request movement, brightness, temperature and relative humidity values. Movement and brightness can also be transmitted automatically or in timed cycles. These measurements give the controller information to use in lighting scenarios and other compatible building automation. The sensor itself has no power output for climate control and does not switch a ventilation unit directly. The manual specifies a 0–40 °C temperature measurement range and 0–100 % relative humidity. Because this model is an input device, lighting delays, dimming and constant-light regulation depend on the chosen APC and its configuration rather than an autonomous lighting output inside the detector.
Bus supply and configuration
Power is supplied through the DALI bus. The current article table states 12.5–22 V, while the manual gives 12–22.5 V DC and identifies the bus as non-SELV. Planning must account for bus current: typically 19 mA at 16 V, a maximum of 32 mA at 10 V during normal operation, and an IEC 62386-101 maximum rating of 84 mA. These figures refer to different conditions and must not be substituted for one another. Bluetooth is intended for configuration with STEINEL Connect. During operation, the detector communicates with system control through DALI; it does not use Bluetooth Mesh lighting-relay groups. Connections use the DA+ and DA− terminals shown in the dedicated IPD wiring diagram.
Mounting and the intended operating environment
The UP concealed-mounted construction is designed for installation in indoor ceilings. The sensor module is magnetically attached to the connection module, and the concealed connection module fits into the intended mounting box. This exact article is rated IP20; protection ratings from other versions in the family must not be transferred to it. The operating environment must remain within 0–40 °C. Dimensions in the technical table and manual are 103 × 103 × 69 mm, with a net weight of 140 g. The separate UP drawing also shows 67 mm depth, so check the complete drawing against the actual mounting box before installation. Separate bus power, an APC and the required luminaire-control components must be included in the system design. The manufacturer’s five-year warranty applies subject to its terms.
