A discreet visible face with useful presence detection
STEINEL IR Quattro MICRO 6m COM1 is a white recessed ceiling presence detector for interiors where lighting should respond to small movements as well as people walking through. Its 15 × 15 mm precision lens sits within a circular 43 mm trim, keeping the visible installation compact. This makes it suitable for a small office, meeting space or another interior with a clearly defined occupied area. The exact model carries an IP65 rating, while its installation manual specifies indoor use. The protection rating therefore does not turn this indoor presence detector into an outdoor motion-detector model.
At the reference installation height of 2.8 m, the detector provides a 6 × 6 m tangential movement area and a 4 × 4 m presence area. Radial movement is also specified over 4 × 4 m. This distinction matters when placing the unit over a desk: walking movement can be detected over a larger area than small movements by a seated person. The square pattern can be aligned with room boundaries and the position of workstations, making the intended occupied area easier to plan. The current data sheet gives a mounting range of 2.5–4 m.
COM1 switching matched to how the room is used
COM1 provides one relay output for switching lighting on and off. In fully automatic operation, presence and the measured ambient light level determine switching. Semi-automatic operation lets the user switch the light on manually, while the detector turns it off after the space is no longer occupied. An external button or switch can connect to the S input for manual commands. This arrangement is useful where daylight and working habits vary, and people need a direct way to choose whether the lighting is required.
The stay-on time spans 5 seconds to 60 minutes, with available settings depending on the controller used. The compatible Smart Remote supports the full time range and a 2–1000 lx threshold with Teach. IQ mode learns from occupancy patterns and adapts the delay; the manual specifies a 5–20 minute range for this learning function. Test mode simplifies commissioning by making the light respond to movement independently of the normal twilight setting. Checking detection first and choosing everyday timing afterwards helps match operation to the room's actual layout and use.
RC5, RC8 and Smart Remote are compatible control accessories. Smart Remote can communicate with a phone over Bluetooth, but that accessory connection does not mean the detector contains a Bluetooth Mesh radio. For installations needing more than one detection point, the model supports wired master/master and master/slave arrangements. The manual permits up to ten detectors on the same phase, subject to its connection diagrams and distance limits. Several discreet ceiling units can therefore extend coverage while retaining a clearly defined wired lighting circuit.
Recess space and LED load selection
The nominal body dimensions are 43 mm diameter by 75 mm deep, but the body length must not be mistaken for the required ceiling void. The installation diagram calls for a 35 mm opening and more than 120 mm of clear depth for the detector and connection. The supply is 220–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz. Permitted LED loading depends on individual lamp power: up to 100 W for lamps below 2 W, 300 W in the 2–8 W group and 600 W for lamps above 8 W. The limit of eight LED or fluorescent lamps and the conditions for the actual load type must also be observed.
