Product Description

Motion-controlled lighting for entrances and approaches

STEINEL MD IR N130 COM1 is a standalone passive infrared motion detector for entrances, façades and paths beside buildings where a clearly bounded detection sector is useful. This is the 130° version in anthracite RAL 7016, manufacturer article 069032. It switches connected lighting automatically, allowing the detector to be selected independently of the luminaires’ appearance. The surface-mounted housing is intended for indoor and outdoor walls, while app settings allow its response to be adapted to the way people use the building and its approaches.

Passive infrared sensing responds to heat radiation from moving objects and detects movement most effectively when a person crosses the detection field. This version has a stated tangential radius of up to 13 m, while conventional radial detection for movement towards the sensor reaches 2.5 m. The lens includes an Eagle Eye area that extends frontal detection to 6 m in the selected direction. The manual states these reach figures at a mounting height of 2.5 m. They describe different movement patterns, so the longest crossing range should not be treated as the head-on approach distance.

Detection can be tailored to the actual approach instead of leaving every part of the surrounding area active. The supplied cover clips mask unwanted segments, and the Eagle Eye window can be aligned with the direction that matters most. Electronic sensitivity settings provide further adjustment after installation. Walls, glazing and other obstacles interrupt infrared detection, making a clear view of the path essential. Positioning and masking are therefore useful parts of commissioning, especially where a public footpath or a neighbouring access route lies nearby.

Settings and coordinated lighting groups

The STEINEL Connect app provides control of the twilight threshold and the period for which the output remains on after movement. The stay-on time is adjustable from 5 seconds to 60 minutes, with a light threshold between 2 and 2000 lux. Teach-IN stores the ambient brightness measured at the time it is activated. This makes it practical to choose the desired response at dusk on site, rather than trying to estimate which numerical light level will suit the entrance.

Integrated Bluetooth Mesh supports configuration from a compatible smartphone or tablet and wireless organisation into lighting groups. Sensors within a group can share group parameters while their sensitivity is adjusted individually. The app also offers a neighbouring-group function to coordinate responses across connected areas. The detector can operate on its own, so grouping is an option for sites with several approaches rather than a requirement for basic motion-controlled switching. Access from another device uses the network key shared through the app.

COM1 provides one relay output for switching on and off. The wiring diagram uses live and neutral supply connections together with a switched live to the load. Load categories must be distinguished when selecting the connected luminaires: the resistive limit is 2000 W, while LED or electronic-ballast loads must respect 500 W, no more than 10 LED/fluorescent lamps, and a combined input capacitance below 176 µF. This COM1 article switches lighting; it does not provide the brightness adjustment, basic light level or fading functions of the separate uDIM version.

A dedicated test mode makes commissioning easier by checking movement detection independently of ambient brightness. The status indicator shows detection, and testing is possible without a load connected. COM1 also offers a pulse mode with a two-second output pulse followed by an eight-second dead time, for example when controlling a compatible staircase lighting timer. The installer can select the mode appropriate to the circuit, while ordinary entrance lighting can use the adjustable stay-on period to provide enough time for people to pass comfortably.

Installation and selection

The N130 fits on the wall surface; an inside or outside corner bracket is available separately when the location requires it. The housing measures 87 mm wide, 82 mm high and 98 mm deep. The permitted mounting range is 1.8–6 m. The current data sheet recommends 2 m as optimum, while the shared instruction manual recommends 2.5 m. Selection of the position should take movement direction and the manual’s detection drawings into account rather than relying on maximum mounting height alone.

IP54 protection and electrical safety class II accompany an outdoor operating temperature range of −20 to +40 °C. Outdoor fitting must follow the manual’s directions for sealing cable entries and preparing the designated drainage openings. The housing should be secured to a stable, vibration-free surface, with mains connection carried out by a qualified installer using the COM1 circuit diagram. The entrance photograph in the gallery illustrates an application of the nexx.IS PRO family; the luminaires shown are not included and the picture does not demonstrate COM1 dimming.

Practical benefits

  • Choose the lighting design independently of the motion detector.
  • Direct Eagle Eye coverage towards the approach that needs attention.
  • Refine unwanted triggering with masking clips and sensitivity settings.
  • Coordinate several approaches through shared lighting-group settings.
