Ceiling motion detection with individually adjustable coverage
STEINEL MD IR N360 AP COM1 is a surface-mounted ceiling motion detector combining passive infrared sensing with app configuration. This white version switches lighting automatically where people move through a detection area, such as an entrance, canopy, passage or another appropriately installed indoor or outdoor location. Its circular 80 mm diameter housing projects 93 mm from the mounting surface. The exact AP product page specifies IP54; the mounting arrangement and cable entries must follow the installation instructions to maintain the intended protection.
Detection depends on the direction of travel as well as distance. At the manual's reference mounting height of 2.5 m, tangential movement is detected over a diameter of up to 26 m, while the surrounding radial zone has a diameter of 6 m. The additional Eagle Eye optic extends detection in one selected approach direction to 6 m. Orienting this optic towards an entrance or expected approach route helps make useful coverage available where people move directly towards the sensor. These measurements describe different movement patterns, rather than a single uniform reach in every direction; the installation diagrams show how coverage changes with height.
Bluetooth Mesh configuration and lighting groups
Four PIR sensors have individually adjustable sensitivity, allowing the installation to respond differently to different directions. STEINEL Connect offers a 1–100% setting for each sensor, while the supplied shrouds restrict unwanted areas optically. This is useful when one side faces a busy walkway and another should respond only near the entrance itself. PIR detection relies on a moving heat source within the sensor's view. Walls, glass and the physical arrangement of a canopy therefore matter when choosing the position; test mode provides a practical way to check coverage before final settings are saved.
This COM1 version includes Bluetooth Mesh connectivity, so settings and group parameters can be managed without reaching the ceiling-mounted detector. Available app functions include light duration, twilight threshold, sensitivity, grouping and neighbouring-group activation. COM1 identifies the relay output used to switch the connected lighting circuit on and off. The lighting supply and switched load remain wired; Bluetooth provides configuration and communication between compatible devices. This combination suits an installation that needs straightforward mains switching together with convenient adjustment after commissioning.
The stay-on time is adjustable from 5 seconds to 60 minutes. A 2–2000 lx response threshold and Teach function allow switching to follow the lighting conditions at the actual location. A short delay can suit a passage, while a longer delay can support areas where people need time after entering. In pulse mode the COM1 output operates for 2 seconds followed by an 8-second pause. This behaviour is relevant when choosing equipment to be triggered by the sensor. Test mode helps separate coverage checks from the final everyday timing and light-level settings.
COM1 load selection and installation
The detector uses 220–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz. For load selection, this listing adopts the more conservative rating in the exact installation manual: LED/electronic-ballast loads up to 350 W, no more than 50 units and C<132 µF; incandescent and halogen loads up to 2000 W. The manufacturer's marketing and data sheet also contain 500 W and 600 W figures, so those higher values are not treated here as the permitted LED rating. Mounting heights from 1.8 to 6 m offer flexibility, with the relevant coverage diagram and approach direction determining the useful area in each installation.
