Product Description
STEINEL L 40 SC is an anthracite outdoor wall light with a motion sensor for entrances, facades, terraces and balconies. Its square aluminium housing and opal diffuser provide pleasant, evenly distributed light. The integrated STEINEL LED system delivers 930 lm with warm white 3000 K light. The passive infrared motion sensor (PIR) turns the light on when it detects movement and ambient light falls below the selected threshold.
Main benefits

Light and light source
The integrated 12.9 W STEINEL LED system delivers 930 lm, with colour rendering of Ra 82. The aluminium construction uses Passive Thermo Control cooling. The rated LED lifetime is more than 60,000 hours, L70B50 at 25 °C; the manufacturer also specifies a mean rated control gear lifetime exceeding 60,000 hours at 25 °C. L70B50 describes lumen maintenance under defined test conditions, rather than the warranty period.
The LED module and control gear cannot be replaced. There is no bulb socket; light colour is determined by the integrated 3000 K LED source.
The CRI/Ra colour-rendering index describes how naturally object colours appear under the light. Values closer to 100 indicate more faithful colour rendering.
Bluetooth control and interconnection
Use the STEINEL Connect app on a Bluetooth-capable smartphone or tablet for configuration. Connect compatible lights through Bluetooth Mesh for coordinated operation. This SC model has its own motion sensor and can trigger a compatible sensor-free C light in the same group. Invite other users to the STEINEL Connect project using a QR code or text code.
Main light brightness is adjustable from 5–100%, with soft light start and a selectable permanent light mode. Basic light brightness can be set to 5–100%, with operation for 10 seconds to 60 minutes, according to ambient brightness, permanently on or off. This allows orientation light between detections, switching to the chosen main light level when movement is detected. Within a Bluetooth group, sensor lights can switch together (master/master), or this sensor light can trigger compatible sensor-free C lights (master/slave).
Set lighting schedules, create lighting groups and use the neighbouring-group function so compatible groups respond to a movement signal. Fade-in and fade-out times can be adjusted. Settings and the operating state are retained during a power interruption and restored when power returns.
Sensor operation and positioning
The 180° PIR sensor detects heat radiation from moving people or animals. Reach is up to 10 m (157 m²) across the detection zone and up to 4 m (25 m²) when approaching directly. For reliable detection, position the light to the side of the expected direction of travel. Optimum mounting height is 2 m, with a maximum of 2.5 m. Walls, glass and other obstacles restrict detection of heat radiation.
The 5 sec–60 min time setting determines how long the light remains on after the last detected movement; every new detection restarts the timer. The 2–2000 lx twilight setting allows operation in darkness or brighter conditions, while Teach-in stores the current ambient light level as the switching threshold. Adapt the detection zone mechanically using the sensor lens cover clips, for example to exclude an adjacent pavement. Electronic reach adjustment is not provided.

Connection and installation
Designed for secure installation on an outdoor wall. Dimensions 105 × 201 × 261 mm (depth × width × height); net weight 1219 g. The housing is aluminium, with an opal plastic diffuser; surface wiring is supported. Supply 220–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz; electrical protection class I requires a protective earth connection. Follow the manufacturer’s wiring diagram with the power disconnected. Operating temperature −20 to +40 °C, impact resistance IK03.
Additional operating data
Network standby power is 0.42 W (the sensor standby rating is also 0.42 W; these are not two loads to add together). Initial light-source colour consistency is SDCM 6. Energy class E and the energy label value of 13 kWh/1000 h apply to the integrated LED light source. Bluetooth transmitter power is 1 mW. To reduce radio interference, observe the manufacturer’s specified minimum distance of 3 m from a Wi-Fi router or access point.
Factory settings: main light time 10 seconds, basic light time 1 minute, twilight threshold 2000 lx and basic light brightness 50%.
Package contents and care
Supplied with one light, wall mount and mounting accessories, three screws, three wall plugs, three spacers, safety information and a quick-start guide, plus three sensor-zone cover clips. A separate remote control and self-adhesive house-number set are not included. For additional wireless control, the manufacturer lists the TapDuo C pushbutton (088620), sold separately. Clean the housing with a soft damp cloth, without aggressive cleaning agents. 3-year manufacturer warranty under its terms.
