Product Description

Presence detection for seated occupants

STEINEL LuxMaster True Presence DALI-2 APC AP is a white ceiling presence detector with 7.2 GHz high-frequency technology and integrated DALI lighting control. It is intended for offices, classrooms and meeting rooms where occupants remain seated and make only small movements. True Presence sensing analyses very small body movements, including movement caused by breathing. It allows lighting control to respond to occupancy even when people are not walking around or making large gestures.

The detection areas serve different purposes. True Presence micro-movement detection covers up to Ø9 m, approximately 64 m², while conventional presence and movement detection extend to Ø15 m, or 177 m². The True Presence function is intended for mounting heights up to 4 m; this is not a claim that breathing-related movement can be detected from a 12 m ceiling. The manual specifies a 2.8–12 m mounting height, while the current article table lists 2–12 m. The reference height is 2.8 m. Sensor placement should relate the required detection area to desks, seats and walking routes.

DALI dimming and daylight control

APC identifies a DALI application controller. This device itself controls compatible DALI luminaire drivers, switching them on and off and changing their output. A separate controller is not required to operate the intended individual system. Lighting can use common Broadcast operation or address up to 64 DALI drivers in a maximum of four DALI groups. Grouping allows different areas of one office or classroom to use different lighting settings. Luminaires require compatible DALI drivers; this detector is not a universal 230 V phase-cut dimmer.

Constant-light control uses the integrated brightness measurement. As daylight changes, the detector increases or decreases the artificial-light contribution to approach the selected target. That target relates to the value measured at the sensor; it does not automatically guarantee a particular illuminance on a desk. An offset can be set between DALI groups relative to the first group, while Teach helps store the chosen light level. The current table specifies 10–100% main-light adjustment; the setting must also suit the dimming capability of the connected drivers.

Once the main-light delay expires, the system can provide basic lighting at 10–50% output, as specified in the manual. Its duration can be set up to 60 minutes, or brightness-dependent operation can be selected. This is useful when reduced illumination is wanted after occupants leave. The DALI bus controls the drivers, while the detector also requires mains power; these connections perform different functions within the installation.

Automatic operation, buttons and twilight mode

Fully automatic operation responds to presence and brightness. In semi-automatic operation, a button turns the lighting on and the detector switches it off automatically. A button can also change the dimming level. The S input accepts an external button, with the manual limiting its cable length to less than 50 m. The system also supports configuration of up to four addressable DALI buttons. Compatible buttons, additional detectors and luminaire drivers are separate system components.

The manual provides two operating modes that differ from movement-dependent control. Light sensor mode operates as pure constant-light control with motion detection suspended. In Nightmatic mode, switching on and off depends on ambient brightness. This APC version therefore also supports independent twilight control. The response threshold is approximately 2–2000 lx. The manual specifies a 30-second to 60-minute True Presence delay, whereas the current product table lists a 20-second minimum. This listing uses the manual range; the settings available on the actual device can be checked in the app.

Bluetooth Mesh and detection settings

The STEINEL Connect app configures detection area, mounting height and sensitivity scenario, and provides DALI addressing and lighting-group setup. Nine sensitivity scenarios are available. A quiet workspace can use greater sensitivity, while an environment affected by vibration needs a different configuration. Scenarios 1 and 2 disable the True Presence function and operate as conventional presence detection. During initial calibration, the room must remain free of movement for approximately 2–2.5 minutes, until the white indication light goes out.

Bluetooth Mesh connects compatible detectors and supports neighbouring-group lighting. The manual allows up to 100 products in one Bluetooth network; this is separate from the limit of 64 DALI drivers on one bus. Up to eight Bluetooth scenes and five DALI lighting scenes can be configured, with schedules also available. Groups should reflect the way rooms are actually used, because connecting several APC detectors in one Bluetooth group links the behaviour of their corresponding DALI groups.

Installation and DALI bus planning

This is the AP model, with a 123 × 123 mm front and 45 mm overall depth. The housing is white, RAL 9003, and its net weight is 276 g. The surface-mounted version has IP54 protection, while the manual specifies indoor ceiling installation. The supply is 220–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz, with detector standby consumption below 1 W according to the manual. High-frequency sensing can respond to movement through glass, wood or lightweight partitions, so the area should be limited electronically to suit the installation. Use a stable mounting location and include quiet seated occupancy in the commissioning check.

The manufacturer specifies a 128 mA guaranteed DALI supply for up to 64 DALI drivers. The IEC 62386-101 table states a guaranteed value of 54 mA and a maximum current of 250 mA. The maximum is not a guaranteed continuous-load budget. Additional buttons or DALI input devices also need to be included when evaluating bus consumption. The manual identifies certification for a single-master application with DALI control gear and separately guarantees use with selected additional input devices; a bus configuration with several control devices is outside that stated certification. Select project connections using the manufacturer's diagram and component compatibility information.
