Product Description
Motion detection for high ceilings and open warehouse areas
STEINEL IS 3360 MX Highbay COM1 AP is a white surface-mounted ceiling motion detector designed for tall indoor spaces. Its MX optics suit locations where the mounting height of a conventional office or corridor detector is insufficient, including open warehouse areas, goods handling spaces and sports halls. The permitted installation height is 4–14 m, with 12 m listed as the optimum. Motion and ambient light can then determine when the connected circuit operates, helping lighting follow activity in the relevant part of a large building.
360° passive infrared detection responds to heat emitted by moving bodies. The optical system provides 1416 switching zones across 11 detection levels and includes coverage immediately below the detector. Direction of travel matters when choosing its position: the maximum tangential coverage, for movement across the detection sectors, is up to Ø36 m, while radial approach is listed at up to Ø14 m. These figures describe different movement patterns. The maximum 18 m radius does not apply equally at every installation height; the manual's height table specifies a 10 m tangential radius when the sensor is mounted at 14 m.
Shelves, partitions and glass can obstruct the infrared sensor's view of a heat source. Positioning should therefore follow actual walking routes and the room layout, rather than relying only on total floor area. The supplied shrouds allow unwanted lens segments to be masked, for example near the boundary with an adjacent working area. After installation, test mode helps establish where movement actually triggers the output. This high-ceiling model is intended to follow moving people and circulation through a space; a workplace where someone remains very still may call for a separate assessment of presence-detection requirements.
Settings that follow daylight and working patterns
The twilight threshold is adjustable from 2 to 1000 lx, and Teach stores the ambient light level measured at the time of setting. This is useful when commissioning the detector against the actual lighting conditions in the room instead of selecting a number in isolation. Daylight mode makes the sensor respond to motion regardless of ambient brightness. Settings are available through the detector's potentiometers, while optional remote controls make later adjustments possible without repeated access to every high mounting point.
The local control provides a 5-second to 15-minute stay-on time, and each new movement restarts the selected delay. The manual separately provides a range up to 60 minutes when using the optional Smart Remote accessory. Pulse mode activates the output for 2 seconds, followed by an 8-second pause, for example to trigger a compatible staircase timer. An appropriately installed switching arrangement also enables four hours of continuous lighting before an automatic return to sensor operation. RC5, RC8 and Smart Remote are separate accessories; the phone connection used by Smart Remote does not make the detector itself a Bluetooth Mesh product.
A COM1 relay for switching the lighting circuit
The COM1 output switches the live conductor of the connected lighting circuit on and off. It provides straightforward automatic lighting control when brightness regulation is unnecessary. To extend a single detection area, the manual permits up to ten detectors connected in parallel on the same phase, while retaining the load limit of one detector. The stated cable length between two detectors is up to 50 m. This allows several approaches to trigger the same lighting circuit without treating each additional detector as an increase in available switching capacity.
LED selection must account for total power, lamp count and starting load. The current table lists 100/300/600 W tiers, but the installation manual limits total LED and electronic-ballast loading to 500 W. For conservative load selection this listing therefore uses 100 W for lamps below 2 W, 300 W for lamps above 2 W and below 8 W, and up to 500 W for lamps above 8 W, while limiting the installation to eight LED or fluorescent lamps and keeping total capacitance below 176 µF. The 2000 W incandescent and halogen rating is not a universal LED load rating.
Surface housing and image context
The square AP housing has a 95 × 95 mm face and a 65 mm depth. Its white RAL 9003 plastic enclosure is intended for surface mounting on an indoor ceiling; the IP54 rating does not change that intended application. Supply is 220–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz. The mounting point should be stable, with at least 50 cm clearance from heat-emitting luminaires to help avoid unwanted triggering. A qualified electrician should check installation and load compatibility against the wiring diagram for this particular COM1 version.

Image context. The main picture is the white square AP housing image published by the manufacturer for this article; COM1 and PF share the same exterior. The warehouse photograph is an IS 3360 MX Highbay family application example without an identifiable individual detector. The warehouse luminaires, shelving and other equipment are not included. The orange detection illustration explains the operating principle and does not guarantee an exact coverage pattern in a particular room.
