Ultrasonic detection for a long corridor
STEINEL DUAL US COM1 UP, article 007843, is a white ceiling presence detector designed for corridors and long passageways. It controls a separate lighting circuit according to movement and ambient brightness. Its 40 kHz ultrasonic sensing spreads around objects, making it useful where furniture interrupts a direct view of an occupant. Ultrasonic sensing does not rely on the heat radiated by a moving body. When planning coverage, consider the shape of the space, open doorways and possible sources of movement such as ventilation fans.
An elongated zone along the passageway
The current manufacturer diagram specifies a 20 × 3 m detection zone at a 2.8 m mounting height, covering 60 m² across both directions of the corridor. These figures describe the total length and width of the zone. The manual's technical data give 18 × 3 m at a 2.5 m mounting height; use that condition when planning the lower installation. The permitted installation range is 2.5–3.5 m. Electronic sensitivity adjustment at the potentiometer allows detection to be adapted to the actual corridor. During commissioning, check doorways and bends as well as the main walking route so the lighting responds where it is needed.
Choose how the room should respond
The COM1 version provides one lighting switching output. In fully automatic mode, it turns the lighting on and off according to presence and the selected light threshold. In semi-automatic mode, an external pushbutton switches the lights on and the sensor switches them off automatically. This choice suits both regularly used routes and rooms where occupants prefer to decide when artificial lighting is required. The external control can be configured for ON-only operation or for manual ON and OFF commands.
The stay-on time adjusts from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, and the light threshold from 10 to 1000 lx, with daylight operation and a TEACH function also available. IQ mode learns the usage pattern and adjusts the delay within a 5–20 minute range. Pulse mode can control a compatible stairwell lighting timer: an approximately 2-second output pulse is followed by an approximately 8-second pause, with daylight operation used in this mode. Potentiometers and DIP switches provide settings at the device. Compatible RC8 and Smart Remote controls are available separately.
Select the lighting load and connection arrangement
The relay supports a maximum resistive load of 2000 W at cos φ = 1. For LEDs, the permitted total depends on individual lamp wattage: 100 W total for lamps <2 W, 300 W total for lamps >2 W and <8 W, and 600 W total for lamps >8 W. The specified total capacitive load is 176 µF. Ballast selection must also take account of the manufacturer's maximum inrush-current figure of 800 A for 200 µs. For specified fluorescent configurations, the manual also limits electronic ballast counts to 30 × (1 × 18 W), 25 × (2 × 18 W), 25 × (1 × 36 W), 15 × (2 × 36 W), 20 × (1 × 58 W) and 10 × (2 × 58 W). Check the individual ballast inrush current when selecting the load. Total wattage alone does not establish compatibility for a group of luminaires. The sensor provides a switched-live L′ output and needs both L and N for its supply.
Wired Master/Master or Master/Slave interconnection supports up to 10 sensors on the same phase. In a Master/Master arrangement, each master controls its own lighting group using the brightness it measures. In a Master/Slave arrangement, the additional sensors report detected movement to the master. This helps cover layouts that need more than one detection position. The offered COM1 version provides lighting ON/OFF control. It does not provide brightness dimming or a separate ventilation output.
Mounting version and gallery context
This is the COM1 UP version for concealed wiring at an indoor ceiling. An in-ceiling adapter or surface-mounting adapter is not included as standard. The face measures 120 × 120 mm, the total depth is 71 mm according to the current article-specific drawing, and the net weight is 229 g. The shared manual gives a family depth of 73 mm; use the article-specific drawing when planning installation. The white RAL 9010 plastic housing has an IP20 rating and electrical protection class II. Its operating temperature range is −25 to +55 °C, and STEINEL specifies a five-year manufacturer's warranty. The ultrasonic detector remains IP20 when used with a suitable surface-mounting adapter.
