Product Description
STEINEL DualTech KNX V3.1 is a white ceiling presence detector combining passive infrared and ultrasonic sensing in one device. It suits offices, meeting rooms and classrooms requiring adjustable KNX occupancy detection. Article 059521 also measures room brightness and transmits control commands over the bus. A separate compatible KNX actuator switches or dims the connected lighting load. The detector is not a conventional 230 V motion switch containing its own local mains relay.
Four sensing elements use 40 kHz ultrasound, while the PIR element responds to changes in infrared radiation caused by a moving person. Ultrasonic waves reflected from room surfaces help detect movement around objects where PIR sensing needs a direct line of sight. These sound waves do not penetrate a wall, so this technology should be distinguished from radar sensing through materials. DualTech's advantage is the configurable combination of its two sensing principles. Initial light activation and subsequent occupancy maintenance can use different detection rules, allowing adjustment for the layout and activities within the room.
ETS parameters can require confirmation from both technologies, accept detection by either one, or select a single technology. A project can use stricter initial activation and more sensitive occupancy maintenance at desks. This is a configurable approach that must be checked in the real room. 360° detection covers the area around the detector. Detailed manufacturer data specify ultrasonic presence coverage of up to Ø 6 m and movement coverage up to Ø 10 m. Both figures are diameters; the larger movement zone does not guarantee detection of small seated movements throughout that area.
Installation is on the ceiling with concealed wiring at a height of 2.5–3.5 m, ideally 2.8 m. The white RAL 9010 plastic housing measures 65 × 120 × 120 mm overall and weighs 158 g net. Choose a suitable installation box and a position that covers the working areas. Ultrasonic reach and PIR sensitivity can be adjusted electronically; individual detection segments cannot be mechanically masked. The IP20 rating is for indoor use without direct water exposure. Its stated ambient operating range is −25 to +55 °C.
Power comes from the KNX bus, nominally 30 V, via the integrated bus coupling. ETS configuration provides up to four logical lighting outputs, presence and HVAC telegrams, basic illumination and constant-lighting control. Dimming requires a suitable external KNX actuator and a compatible dimmable luminaire or driver. The occupancy-lighting threshold is adjustable within 10–1000 lx. Automatic or semi-automatic operation, stay-on time and the supported IQ logic determine how the lighting responds while people use the space and after they leave.
A separate photocell controller function responds to measured brightness independently of occupancy, sending KNX commands to the appropriate external actuator. Brightness information can also support other automation included in the project. Manual control can use a compatible KNX wall pushbutton or optional RC7 remote; the detector has no integrated user lighting switch. RC6, RC7, Smart Remote and Control PRO mounting accessories are separate purchases. After installation, check room entry, movements at desks, the selected combination of sensing technologies and daylight response. These checks help establish predictable operation following occupancy and the configured control system.
