Product Description
KNX presence detection along a corridor
STEINEL Hallway KNX 3.5 AP is a black surface-mounted detector for indoor ceiling installation. The manufacturer article number offered here is 086442. Its two high-frequency sensing elements create an elongated detection pattern suitable for corridors in offices and other buildings. The detector uses 5.8 GHz HF technology and responds to movement towards the mounting position as well as movement across the monitored area. Hallway is not a TruePresence breathing-micro-movement detector; its corridor coverage should be selected around the movement route and the geometry of the building.
Adjusting the corridor coverage
The manufacturer specifies a 25 × 3 m detection area at a mounting height of 2.8 m, within an installation range of 2–4 m. Although the coverage angle is given as 360°, this describes a narrow corridor pattern rather than a circular area with a 25 m diameter. Reach and sensitivity can be adjusted separately for each direction. The letters in the STEINEL logo provide an orientation reference when assigning the settings. HF movement detection may extend through glass, wood or lightweight partitions, so commissioning should include tests at both corridor ends and beside adjoining rooms. Electronic adjustment helps reduce unwanted triggering; mechanical masking of individual segments is not provided on this model.
Brightness measurement and lighting logic
An important distinction of this black version is that it has no internal brightness measurement. The manufacturer explicitly identifies this limitation for black detectors in the Control Pro II V3.5 application description, even though the shared product table also lists lighting settings. Consequently, this article should not be selected as a self-contained lux sensor or a twilight switch using its own light measurement. A design requiring brightness-dependent lighting must provide an appropriate external brightness value within the KNX system and configure the relevant ETS objects accordingly. The detector still supplies movement and presence information, so its dark housing can serve an installation in which light measurement is handled separately. This distinction also applies when planning constant-light regulation.
Bus supply and building control
The detector connects to the 21–30 V KNX bus and does not contain a mains lighting relay. The current article page specifies a rated current of 30 mA; the power supply must be selected for the requirements of the entire bus line. Alongside occupancy information, the application supports room temperature and relative humidity values, HVAC control information and logic functions. The operating manual specifies a temperature measurement range of 0–40 °C and relative humidity measurement from 0–100 %. These values are intended for building automation, with the required objects enabled, addressed and configured as part of the installation design. Luminaires, a KNX bus power supply and the required actuators are separate system components and are not included with this detector.
Configuration and physical installation
The principal KNX functions are configured in ETS. The STEINEL Connect app uses Bluetooth to access supported sensor settings and can add the detector to a suitable Bluetooth lighting system. Bluetooth does not provide communication into or out of the KNX system; the presence of both interfaces must not be interpreted as a protocol gateway. The surface-mounted housing measures 123 × 123 × 62 mm, has a net weight of 265 g and is rated IP20 for indoor use. The full operating manual states an ambient range of −20 to +40 °C, while the current article page states −25 to +50 °C. Without additional manufacturer confirmation, the common range of −20 to +40 °C is the conservative planning limit. Choose a stable mounting position without vibration and check the final response along the intended walking route.
Image context
The main image shows the offered black Hallway KNX 3.5 AP, article 086442. The corridor photograph is a manufacturer application illustration: the exact installed model, interface and colour are not established, and room equipment is not included. The other images show the detection pattern and dimensions for the relevant mounting type.
